  • 5 Simple Steps to Environmental-Conscious Food

    • What's the big deal with food? Why should I care where it came from? Is there really such a thing as eating "environmentally"? Join Jenn Sattler from Growing Oshkosh as she discusses these questions and how changing food consumption habits is one of the most important environmental steps anyone can take. Jenn will offer up 5 simple steps for reclaiming food in our current food system. These practical steps will help your family feel more comfortable with their food choices while staying within a tight budget. Come and join the conversation!

  • Chemical-Free, Natural, Organic, Eco-friendly, Homeopathic and other label terms: What is meaningful, what is misleading, what is meaningless?

    • Companies and their advertising teams as well as small businesses have recognized that consumers value environmentally-minded products and companies.  Unfortunately this often means that product packaging or advertising strategies use terms that might have very little meaning.  Applied to environmental claims, this practice has its own term:  Greenwashing has been defined as "the act of misleading consumers regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product or service" (www.stopgreenwash.org).  Some terms are legally defined by the FDA and can only be used in certain ways, other terms imply something but may mean something else, while some terms are completely meaningless or are unsupported by science.  We will look at examples of each category, talk about what happens when a company is found to have made false claims, and what the consumer can do to help avoid falling for misleading and meaningless claims.

From traditional pots to recycled bottles, there's always a way to grow food. Home grown food tastes better and is healthier for you because it hasn't lost nutrients over the transport of hundreds of miles. Plus, you can dig through your garbage to make some fantastic container gardens, which helps reduce your impact on the earth and increase the sustainability of your home. Take home your own container garden, as well as some extra tidbits on how to make your garden the most successful yet!
